Why Labor Day is Personal for Me

Happy Labor Day, everyone.

This holiday is deeply personal for me. Both of my parents were proud, card-carrying union members. My mom was a member of the Communication Workers of America (CWA) during her career at AT&T, and my dad's second career was as a railroad man with BNSF, and a proud member of the United Transportation Union (UTU).

Like his brother and his father before him he was a union rail worker.

I saw firsthand how their unions fought for them, ensuring they had the fair wages, safe working conditions, and secure retirement they had earned. The labor movement is what built the American middle class, winning protections like the 40-hour work week and workplace safety standards that benefit all of us today, whether we're in a union or not.

On this Labor Day, we honor that legacy and the profound dignity of a hard day's work.

I hope you are all having a well-deserved, restful weekend. And a special thank you to everyone who is still on the job today—we see you, and we are grateful.
